The Democratic Republic of the Congo remains in unrest due to protests over President Joseph Kabila and his efforts to prolong his presidency. A total of 42 people have been killed during the protests. Ten of the casualties were police officers. Many people believe Kabila is delaying the country’s census to continue his rule. More bodies have been found this week from AirAsia Flight 8501. Divers found six passengers still in their seats on the ocean floor. So far, 59 bodies have been recovered from the crash. Officials are currently planning to use equipment to raise the wreckage from the bottom of the ocean to recover more casualties and clues from the December crash. [Wall Street Journal]

New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was arrested Thursday morning. Known to many as one of the most powerful political figures in New York, the 70-year-old was charged with mail fraud, wire fraud and extortion. Prosecutors have seized just over $3 million of Silver’s funds. A complaint by officials claims Silver allegedly stole $4 million in payments and falsely presented them as attorney fees. [AP]
