UPDATE: 02/19/2015 4:15 P.M.

After a standoff with police, the suspect involved in the shooting of Tammy Meyers has been placed in police custody. The suspect’s mother was reportedly at the scene and claimed he was going to harm himself.

Tammy’s husband slammed reporters when he arrived at the standoff.

“Are you all happy? You made my wife look like an animal … and my son. There’s the animal, a block away. Are you happy?” Robert Meyers screamed.

The suspect’s identity hasn’t been released.

As family continues to mourn the loss of Tammy Meyers after her death in last week’s road rage shooting, more details surrounding the incident are beginning to surface.

The mother of four was giving her 15-year-old daughter driving lessons in the teen’s high school parking lot before she was killed. A Las Vegas homicide detective revealed that after Meyers and her daughter were cut off near their home, the 44-year-old dropped her daughter off and asked her son Brandon, who was armed, to help her track down the driver. When they followed the unidentified man, he opened fire.

Tammy was shot in the head and died on Valentine’s Day. According to CNN:

Meyers drove back out of the neighborhood to see if she could find the man, Lt. Ray Steiber said.

“The vehicles and persons found each other,” he said. “Through the course of them finding each other, at one point Mrs. Meyers was following what we consider a suspect vehicle and then at another point they broke apart and Mrs. Meyers went home.”

Shortly after Meyers arrived at her house a second time and got out of her car, a gray or silver sedan pulled into the cul-de-sac and a volley of shots was fired.

The son returned fire, Steiber said.

Steiber is focused on finding the shooter; he also told reporters the suspect appeared to be the one who fired first. It isn’t clear if he was aware Brandon had a gun.

Supporters spoke out about the reports during a candlelight vigil for Tammy on Tuesday night. Brandon says he was protecting his family and isn’t a vigilante, like many reporters claim.

“Everyone can think what they have to think,” the 22-year-old said. “I did it for a reason and I’d do it for anyone I loved.”

His father stood by his son.

“My son is not an animal. My son is a hero in my book,” Robert Meyers said. “There were mistakes like everyone of us have made in our lives. But this particular mistake was made to keep a bigger mistake from happening. And my wife paid the ultimate price for it.”

Police drew up a sketch of the man. He is said to be white and in his late 20s to early 30s.
