The Daily Grind Video

Video posted Wednesday of Philadelphia police officers beating and kicking a man as he lay face down during an April arrest has prompted an internal investigation, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.

The man, identified by the site as 22-year-old Tyree Carroll, was also stunned by a Taser during the brutal arrest. At least a dozen officers were involved in the incident. The arrest was made public by Los Angeles-based blogger Jasmyne Cannick, who told the News the man’s family reached out to her to raise awareness about the horrors their loved one endured at the hands of police.

Police say Carroll injured officers during the arrest, a detail Carroll’s family does not deny.

From the Philadelphia Daily News:

Cannick told the People Paper on Wednesday night that Carroll’s family said he admits to biting the officer, but says he did so because he has asthma and claims that one of the officers was restricting his breathing in the attempt to subdue him.

About two minutes into the video, one of the officers yells, “Stop!” and the group backs off. Carroll is then walked into a nearby patrol vehicle. Carroll’s relatives told Cannick that he was stopped by a police officer for riding his bike the wrong way down a one-way street, she said.

In the disturbing video, Carroll can be heard screaming for his grandmother as he’s subdued. Police officers can also be heard yelling demands to stun the young man with a Taser. Police, however, told NBC News it didn’t appear the man was hit with the instrument. A statement released Thursday says police found 5.3 grams of crack cocaine on Carroll.

The case has been sent to the Internal Affairs Bureau. Carroll, who remains in custody, is expected to be arraigned on July 21.
