While most people were tuned in to the 88th Academy Awards last night, others were watching Revolt’s livestream of the #JUSTICEFORFLINT event.
Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, Hannibal Buress, Jesse Williams, and Janelle Monáe appeared at the free fundraiser in Flint, Mich., to raise awareness and money to help assuage the city’s water crisis, as well as bring attention to the human rights violations Flint residents have suffered.
There were musical performances by artists including Jazmine Sullivan, DeJ Loaf, Vic Mensa and Stevie Wonder.
Although Coogler’s hit film Creed earned Sylvester Stallone an acting nomination at the Oscars, neither the director nor the rest of the film was acknowledged by the Academy. So Ryan and his famous friends took their talents to Michigan to help, telling Buzzfeed that organizers chose to hold #JUSTICEFORFLINT on the Sunday because it fell on the final weekend of Black History Month.
As the night wound down and the Oscars ended, Ava DuVernay took to Twitter to reveal the success of #JusticeForFlint, tweeting that they raised over $100,000.
