Rihanna is a girl in her twenties, having fun.

Wendy Williams, I’m sorry, just sounds like an older woman who is jealous of a younger woman’s vitality. And truth be told, it’s disappointing to see. Not to mention highly antifeminist.

Wendy made a joke that I thought was in very poor taste. She’s not a relatively unknown writer like me. She’s a well-known personality with her own platform and a captive television audience of what, millions? And she used it for that?

See, that shit would just never fly on Ellen. She’s got too much class for that. Plus, it wasn’t even funny, it was downright mean.

I hate seeing women bashing on other women, especially someone like Rihanna who’s grown up in the spotlight, and gone through what she’s been through with the whole world watching.

Wendy said:

“Rihanna is not girlfriend material, am I wrong? Rihanna is the kind of girl, you know she’s hot, she’s sexy, you do her…and then you take your penicillin.”

And then what kills me even more is that part of her audience clapped. Clapped? So we’re doing this now? Grown women are clapping at the expense of a young woman’s sexuality?

What’s the point of that? Slut-shaming another woman?

Aren’t we mature enough to know better?

I know I got a lot of questions, but shit…why’d she have to do that?

I hope people think twice before publicly decrying someone else’s character. And if you’re about female empowerment, you’d oughta think three times about doing it towards another woman.

I’m not saying that no woman can do no wrong, but when you attack a young woman’s sexuality you’re not just insulting her, but her public image, and any young woman who can relate to that image.

With the emergence of Rihanna and Drake’s double-video of “Work,” why couldn’t the conversation be about what she did that was unique? Original? Most people don’t release a double-video. Personally, my friends and I found that interesting. We also even discussed the concepts of each video separately and which one appealed to us more. It’s funny, because no where in our recent remarks about Rihanna did the conversation ever veer towards slut-shaming her for the sexualized nature of the video. If anything, a woman dancing in a busy club in front of a giant mirror is kind of introspective.

This isn’t the first time Wendy has come for Rihanna, and it probably won’t be the last. But let me shift the conversation just for a moment to who Rihanna is to me and so many other girls who can relate to her for whatever reason.

Rihanna is a business woman. A successful one at that. For all of us young women who think that we could handle calling the shots in a major role, she is a role model. She is also a talented singer and performer—no question about that. And when I went through a debilitating depression, Rihanna’s music was there when I could hardly listen to any other artists at all. Her song “Cry” was actually the first song in over a year to get me to sing again.

I think the thing that most young women can both relate to, and thank Riri for, is her ability to be herself. It’s her “gives no fucks” attitude that helped so many young women “give no fucks” where they should “give no fucks”. I can say that she helped do this for me, I know that other people I’ve come across feel this way, and I’m sure many more share the same sentiments globally. That is after-all her reach. Rihanna is a global superstar in her own right.

Wendy’s “penicillin” comment from the other day reminded me of something an online troll would say. It was just negative and classless. There’s nothing more backfiring than trying to demean a woman’s class with a tasteless comment like that. And coming from an older woman…well it just looks like resentful ageism.

The feminist movement does not see age. The feminist movement is about empowerment of women of all shapes and sizes, ages, ethnicities etc. If you’re for female advancement then you should be celebrating female sexuality, not barraging it with shamelessly negative commentary.

Don’t we get enough of that from men?

#NotCoolWendy, not cool at all.
