Sean Paul is usually laying low these days, but he always shows up when it’s time to rep his set — music that is.
Last year, the dancehall legend slammed Drake for not giving the genre enough credit for inspiring his sound behind his hit Views single, “One Dance.” But apparently Drizzy’s follow up songs haven’t done anything to prove to Sean Paul that he has respect for the classic genre and the Jamaican artist who made it pop.
In a recent interview with metro.co.uk, Sean admitted, “I think at the time when [‘One Dance’] was popping off, it would have been good for him to actually put accolades towards the whole culture. He’s friendly with a few people in the business in Jamaica and that’s good, I love it. But if he had given more accolades when he was actually making it and said, ‘This is the music I love,’ it would have been cool.”
Drake isn’t the only artist that Sean Paul feels swagger jacking the dancehall sound. He compared the 6 God to Ed Sheeran, claiming that Ed did things the right way. Sean told reports, “Ed Sheeran has done one song that is huge and it’s dancehall reminiscent [‘Shape of You’]. But that is one song, he [Drake] had an album full of dancehall so I think he should have paid a bit of an accolade and told people in the press that is where I’m coming from, I have a love for that music.”
Back in September, the Jamaican star said that although he appreciated dancehall’s resurgence around the globe, he felt that Drizzy, Justin Bieber and Major Lazer hadn’t done enough to give credit to the culture that created the genre. Beenie Man is probably somewhere shaking his head right now.
