Ohio Senator Rob Portman was vocally against gay marriage. However, after his son Will, a freshman at Yale, came out to him and his wife, he had a change of heart.

“As a congressman, and more recently as a senator, I opposed marriage for same-sex couples,” said Portman. “Then something happened that led me to think through my position in a much deeper way.”

Portman and his son are very close, so he was surprised to find out that his son was gay. After the news broke, he still supported and loved his son the same way. Portman has said that learning about Will’s sexuality “prompted me to consider the issue from another perspective.”

Portman was under consideration to be on Mitt Romney’s ticket as a Vice Presidential candidate. He says that the Romney team knew of his son’s sexual orientation prior to considering him.

After his son came out, protestors at the University of Michigan Law School, where he previously gave a commencement adress, rallied against him. Portman states that he soon reached out to Dick Cheney who has a gay daughter.

Portman believes that the bible’s themes of “love and compassion” have caused him to think that “all of our sons and daughters ought to have the same opportunity to experience the joy and stability of marriage.”

Perhaps, the key to politics is family.
