When David Beckham visited Shanghai’s Tongji University on Thursday, we’re sure he wasn’t expecting this.
Around 1,000 fans were waiting at the university for the former soccer star’s visit, which was part of his week-long tour of China as their new football ambassador. But when he stepped out of his Bentley, all hell broke lose as fans trampled one another to get to him.

Shanghai police are reporting that two university security guards and two students were injured.
Beckham issued an apology via his Weibo account:
“Sorry I couldn’t get out on the pitch to see the teams. It was impossible to get through the massive crowds,” he wrote, wishing the injured “a speedy recovery.”
