Following the end of
Issa Rae‘s game-changing series “Insecure,” her latest hit rap series,
“Rap Sh!t,” we continue to celebrate the innovator, actress, writer, and producer on her birthday today (Jan. 12).
In Feb. 2021, Issa took to Instagram (in a post that has since been deleted) with a reminder of where she started, captioning a throwback photo: “10 years ago today, I released the first episode of “The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl.” I had just turned 26, it was my third web series (the first one I was in), and my big plan was to sell these dingy ass t-shirts (😂 Thanks to the real ones who bought some). I had no idea the series was going to change my life — but my broke ass was sure the fuck ready for it to. I am deeply appreciative of everyone (cast, crew, writers, supporters) who helped to take it as far as it got.”
Issa Rae has expanded beyond the “Awkward Black girl” we first met on her YouTube series. She now has a flourishing media company, HOORAE, which empowers and encourages other creators to forge their own paths the way she did. Rae has multiple brand deals like her partnership with Delta, which inspires travel and fashion. She is still rooting for everybody Black with constant collaboration across multiple industries like TV, film, music and more.
The woman just has IT! Rae is far more than what you may see on the Internet. She is unapologetic, fierce and downright gorgeous! Today, we celebrate Issa as the funny, talented, innovative, community-centered, SEXY queen that she is.
