In an interview with Smithsonian magazine, Groening recounted that he had named the town after the TV show Father Knows Best, which took place in a town called Springfield. Groening figured it was the Springfield that was near his own hometown of Portland, Oregon.

Groening told the magazine, “When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ‘This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’ And they do.”

Officials in Oregon have known since 2007, when Groening signed a painting to them: “Yo to Springfield, Oregon–The Real Springfield! – Your Pal, Matt Groening. Proud Oregonian 2007!”

They did a good job keeping a secret up until now.

Congratulations Oregon, one of the most iconic fictional cities of all time is located in your state!
