The Content Of Senator Reid's Character

In life, often times we say the wrong things.  We are usually judged by the words that we deliver, not the intention that is behind them.  When Senator Harry Reid was quoted in the new book, Game Change, saying that the President is “light skinned” with “no negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,” we are right to deem these words offensive.  However, it is important that we do not judge the Senator solely by his words, but more importantly by the content of his character.

Over the years, the Senator has been a strong advocate and supporter of strengthening human and civil rights in our country and around the world.  He is leading the effort to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, which will be a major accomplishment for the advancement of the rights for gay people.  He was at the forefront of the first minimum wage increase in over a decade, which was passed in 2007.  It has been his leadership in the Senate that has given us a chance to make significant reforms in health care that will save millions of lives.  I know Senator Reid, and I know his choice of words were poor.  However, like the President, I forgive him, for I know that in his heart he goes to work everyday to make the lives of all Americans better.

  • sounds like a ploy from the liberal media and right wing media to get black folks upset over little words but for some reason the media is more upset then black America,hmmm...

i never heard somebody speak the truth without offending anybody.

  • Yes! Let it be expressed that people say things without natural thinking, instead they use the pre-mature thoughts that conform because of very relative pre-tensions associated with their life.We often have to remember we witness these things for a reason,Growth happens at many measures and who will be there for the ride as each and everyone moves up or down, left or right,Definetly not us,,,so dont carry the negativeness around with you that you wont truly grasp.Just continue to collect this information as it comes in and only for what it is.Love and Salutes!!!

Tonight’s Topic: SPECIAL GUEST: R&B SINGER TONY TERRY-ARE TODAY'S YOUTH CARRYING ON THE DREAM OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING?

We will celebrate the life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. It’s ironic in the day of the civil rights movement our youth were a huge factor in the success of the movement. What will bring about change now? Our youth seem to be misguided into things that have no relevance to the quality of their lives or the investment in their future. What will bridge the Civil Rights generation and the Hip Hop Generation to infuse the knowledge of the struggle that gave them the freedoms they enjoy today? What will the youth regardless of color, race or creed bring into this 21 century that will make life better? What is the answer to gangs, drugs and gun violence in the major cities of this country involve all children not just minorities?
  • I wonder if Sen Reid were a Republican, would the president and others be so forgiving?? Or would there be an outcry for resignation. HMMMMM????
  • Why are Americans so sensitive to the truth? Like seriously come on now - many think & say this behind closed doors - he only open the can of worm to the public by speaking out loud in a book what is in their heads. Corporate America is run by this very description - so why be offended by what is an obvious truth???? As a Black person, I was not offended - he spoke the truth. The truth shall set you free.
    • Americans need to stop being hypocrites & get that sensitive chip off their shoulders. This place is filled with bigotry & political correctness "it just sickening" ... it's as if one must be afraid of speaking the truth just to satisfy the politics of it all. The light skin or interracial house n*ggas are more trusted than the dark skinned not so well spoken or even well spoken field n*ggas. It is rare as with women holding CEO or COO position whereby a qualified dark-skin field n*gga is put in control & most often times its a man. Like I said the truth is the truth - racism plays a part in all things - Obama isn't fully black, no matter what racists America subscribing to Jim Crow laws, yet wanting to rid racism & prejudice believe. Black American are so foolish, they know not what the damage they are doing by continuously subscribing to such Garbage. Why should he deny his white heritage - this is the only reason why those WHITE PEOPLE trusted him as well - this was one reason for their votes - so give me a break - NO we do not have a black president - we were afforded a "HALF BLACK" president. Intelligence & Intellect is so questionable in this country. There are too many intelligent fools walking around breathing air. In order to move past this issue of race & racism - we need to get rid of Jim Crow behaviors & strengthen the alliances in America by referring to all as AMERICANS rather than separation of words that you have to tick on ballots to describe who you are. This too need to be removed - why should I have to tick what race I am for census & benefits? Can't we count human lives differently like other countries?
  • Senator Harry Reid is my senator and I wasn't offended by his statement about President Obama being light skinned and speaking well educated. I've been black my whole life and I don't believe there is anything racist about stating the obvious about racism in this country. The fact that the statement came from a white man speaks only to the legacy of racism that still exists in this country. The reality is President Obama light skinned made him more acceptable to whites living in their lily white communities in places like Iowa, Idaho, etc. Any black person who believes some one looking like Kimora Lee Simmons husband would have been electable is in a state of pure denial. I would imagine anyone believing that his light skin didn't impact whites voting for him must be living under the same rock that Micheal Steele climb out from under to accept the Republican party using his black face to paint there party black!!! The reality is that race is a factor in every aspect of our lives. There are racist and there are just as many people who notice it and just don't care. My senator was merely stating the obvious and to anyone offended by his statements are just too sensitive to a sad reality that our kids have managed to see beyond. I am a mother with two teenager and my kid's group of friends are a diverse group of kids who represent the reality of this country today. My daughter's friends are a close group of girls who are hispanic, white, black, asian, and biracial. None of them caring about the differences in their color and race. This issue of race has been used by both parties to divide us a nation. I think it sad that at a time when Senator Harry Reid is in Washington trying to pass legislation to improve health care, education, and the economy for millions of African Americans many are trying to paint this man as a racist. Poor choice of words absolutely but truth is truth how ever worded.
    • I agree with you excluding one item. I don't think it was a poor choice of words. I think he was exact. He said dialect. Obama doesn't have a tradional African American dialect. He sounds like he's from Minnesota to me. LOL. I don't think the senator made mention to hes command of the English Language our his level of education.
  • Russell, get out of la-la land and hold people accountable
  • True or False? A presidential candidate looking like Shabba Ranks or Biz Markie can get elected in America? What about a candidate who speaks like Gucci Man? Keep it 100 y'all! Reid was touching on the same points. Yes he was sloppy with his articulation, but don't let the core meaning get lost in translation. All he was saying is that this country in only (barely) ready for a hybrid brother to hold the office.
  • I believe what the senator said was extremely out of context but there is no need to hold a grudge over words.
  • Although his words were not the best choice; keep in mind that he was speaking about the American public not himself. He said "the US is ready for a Black President...". If you think even in this day and age his statement is incorrect than you are naive. Racism is alive and well in the country and it is a shame. Don't condem the man for telling the truth. His record stands for itself in the arena of civil rights/human rights.
  • I know Harry Reid's office very well and the comment is still promoting HATE Crime he is a person of circumstances and his words are true to his heart he is a racist that will take all he can get also if he was that civil he would not have made that statement I don't forgive Mr. Reid for putting a bad choice of words in a book that the world will read and passed down to children everywhere he should stop the press on change the word and then we will believe he's not a racist. I STAND SOLID ON MY STATMENT, people were directed to his office for stim money and his office only help certian ones ????????? STOP THE PRESS ON THE BOOK BEFORE IT REACHES THE WORLD
  • It saddens me every time I read an article about racial issues. You would think that we would have overcome that by now. I must say that I do not agree with you on the matter of the senator. I was always taught to be careful with what I say. I also noticed that when a person says something to that degree they had to be thinking it all the while. That was not a statement that pops into your head overnight. Can people actually forgive him for making that statement and still trust him? That is a question that needs to be addressed.
