What are your five favorite stand-up comedy specials?
Richard Pryor’s Live From Sunset Strip, Eddie Murphy Delirious, Damon Wayans Still Standing, Chris Rock’s Bigger and Blacker, Martin Lawrence’s first HBO One Night Stand, the 30 minute joint. I have to give an honorable mention to Kings of Comedy because Bernie went in on that joint.
A lot of people forget the Damon Wayans one.
Damon’s a beast.
Speaking of Damon, there are still a lot of comedians that do characters, which paves the way for you. Who are some of your inspirations as far as that is concerned?
As characters?
Like Eddie Murphy on SNL, Damon Wayans, comedians who do characters and impressions. Who are some of your favorites?
Well, you just named two of them. Eddie is definitely the one who inspired most of this generation and the In Living Color generation. Eddie Murphy, he gets slept on for his characterization, what he did In Living Color and then Frenchie and all of that. And then Damon Wayans, Jim Carrey, and I’m going to throw a curveball and go with Tracey Ullman. My show is patterned after her because she played all these different characters convincingly and consistently.

Bernie Mac stole the show during The Kings Of Comedy. This comedic great told one of the funniest stories about his sister’s kids wanting some milk and cookies. It’s hard to keep a dry eye while watching this clip.
