Carnel Chamberlain’s body was found under the wooden deck at the house on the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe reservation.

Kevin Chamberlain, the tribe’s former chief, says he did not know what led investigators back to the house, 70 miles north of Lansing, Michigan.

Search teams spent several days searching through woods, water, and even through the tribe’s waste area.

The boy disappeared while in the care of his mother’s boyfriend. Police have said the boyfriend wasn’t very cooperative during the search, according to Fox Detroit.

Former chief Chamberlain is a cousin of Carmel’s mother, Jaimee. He says:

“There’s a lot of anger, just utter despair and disbelief. I don’t know how else to define it. After a long week of searching and hoping, we’re at a horrific, bitter end.”

Tribal police referred calls to the FBI, who declined to comment on the investigation. Any charges will be handled by the federal authorities, who have jurisdiction on Indian reservations.
