There’s an old saying that one should never throw out clothes because fashions always come back into style.

Well, if fashionistas of the past never parted with their clothes, there would be no vintage shops at hand to help escape the monotone retail trap of wearing what everyone else is wearing.

Call it vintage, call it thrift or call it plain ol’ second hand clothing, but the truth is that a lot of iconic looks can be emulated while thrifting.

With the remake of the classic 1976 film Sparkle underway, we’re sure there will be a burst of interest in recreating the retro style of the 1950s songstresses.

The Way We Wore (LA)

Los Angeles is the land of all the glitz and glam, so of course they would have the best digs for a thrift shop! The Way We Wore is a far cry from what we would consider a run-of-the racks thrift shop, it is chock-fulla hand picked items that range from vintage clothing, jewelry, shoes and accessories that span the entire 20th century. They also boast an incredible selection of cocktail dresses and evening gowns that are sure to help you get into the show groove.

Vintage Underground Chicago

If your grandmom was a Sparkle girl, this is exactly what her closet would look like. Full of costume jewels, ravishing gowns and even a bit of home furnishings, the Chicago shop is the best bet for recreating a little high-gloved flair in the Windy City.

C Madeleines

Looking for the perfect pair of ’50s sunnies? C Madeleines may be the perfect stop. The Miami-based shop can provide what you need from any decade with one click on their website, from taffeta dresses to over the top garden hats. But of course, all good things come with hefty price tags, and good vintage from this Miami spot is no exception.

Frock of Ages Atlanta

Down in the Dirty “A” and feeling like taking a trip back in time? Frock of Ages is the place to make it happen. With a large collection of fine eveningwear from almost any decade in the twentieth century, ’50s glam included. Aside from their extensive collection of fancy clothes, they carry a good dose of modern, gently used items to mix things up a bit.
