Just one day after rapper Common took to the VMA stage to lead the audience in a moment of silence for slain teenager Michael Brown, Kerry Washington referenced the police shooting during a red carpet pre-show at the Emmy Awards. When asked how she felt about the possibility of becoming the first African-American to win the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in her hit show Scandal, Washington said: “This has been a really complicated day for me. I started the day watching the funeral services for Michael Brown. Since a truce between Israel and Hamas collapsed on August 19, there have been a reported 350 Israeli airstrikes that have killed 112 Palestinians. Even more shocking are the number of children that have perished since the fighting began. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than a quarter of those dead are children. Police have tracked down an Omaha man who violated his parole after he posted a video for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Jesean Morris was released in March after he was tried and sentenced for his involvement in a 2010 shooting when he was 16. Someone on Facebook saw his ice bucket video and reported him to police. After learning of his location, police arrested the man who allegedly lied to them about his name, then spit in their face. Read about it here…[Gawker]

A USC football player is quite the hero this morning, after hopping from a second floor balcony to save his drowning nephew from a pool. Senior cornerback Josh Shaw noticed the 7-year-old struggling in the pool when he jumped from the balcony and onto the concrete, spraining his ankles in the process. “I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew,” Shaw said Monday. “My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible.” Shaw was named team captain just hours before saving his nephew, Carter. Carter was said to be a bit traumatized after the incident, but physically OK. Read about it here…[NBC]
