Bay Area rapper The Jacka was killed in a shooting in East Oakland Monday night, police say.
The Jacka, real name Dominic Newton, was shot on MacArthur Boulevard by 94th Avenue. Witnesses say they heard shots fired around 8:15 p.m. As of Tuesday, no suspects have been arrested.
The 37-year-old Pittsburgh native began his rap career in the ’90s as a member of Mob Figaz, before breaking to pursue a solo career in the early 2000s. The underground artist released collaborative LP Highway Robbery with rapper Freeway just last year.
Friends, fans, and fellow artists took to Twitter to express their grief and send condolences.
