Beginning Friday night, Rucker Park in Harlem, NYC was alive and buzzing with excitement.

VIBE Magazine, HOT 97, BKNY Printing, Kevin Powell and BK Nation all partnered up to present the First Annual Trayvon Martin Invitational. Chris Latimer orchestrated the event.

The Entertainers Basketball Classic (EBC) paused their summer tournament to welcome eight of the finest streetball teams, including the Bronx Bingo All-Stars, Xmen from Brooklyn, and the Skull Gang, who had the homecourt advantage in Harlem, to play some ball for the Trayvon Martin Foundation. Tuesday (July 30) the champion will be decided.

As basketball players, fans, and organizers gathered in the historic city park, the light mood was tempered by reminders that the Florida teen’s tragic death was the reason for the game.

Secured by police officers and security guards, families and friends had the opportunity to watch the legendary streetball players battle it out, not just for a championship, but for a cause.

People of all ages stopped by our Trayvon Martin Foundation booth to take flyers, ask questions, make donations, and buy T-Shirts. Everyone, including C.J Watson of the Indiana Pacers, showed their support in some small, significant way and it was obvious that Martin’s death had struck a chord in uptown New York City. Some people mentioned it could have been their son in that very park.

The emcees, Hannibal the Electrifying One and EJ The Mayor, insisted everyone take a moment to hug family members and to never forget what a blessing it is to have that ability. People who bought T-shirts put them on right away, while others showed up already sporting their own Martin gear.

Between the competition, the poppin’ music, and lively atmosphere, there’s no excuse for missing this summer’s hottest event! The games continue tonight and tomorrow, so be sure to come out. You won’t be disappointed.

If for some incredibly important and unavoidable reason you can’t make it, visit the Trayvon Martin Foundation website to make a donation.
