The family of an 84-year-old man is demanding answers from New York City police officers after they allegedly beat him for jaywalking on Sunday.
According to Think Progress, Kang Wong, 84, was arrested after crossing the street illegally. Witnesses claim that Wong didn’t pose a threat to officers, but he still was left bloodied and bruised after the arrest.
After Wong was seen crossing an intersection illegally, an officer made him stand against a nearby wall while writing a ticket. According to eyewitness Ian King, Wong did not understand the officer due to a language barrier, and attempted to walk away from the scene. The officer tried to pull Wong back to the wall, and “that’s when he began to struggle with the cop,” King explained. Additional cops entered the scene and started beating the elderly man — an attack that “left [Wong] bloody and dazed.”
Wong’s son, who refused to give reporters his name, was confused about the ordeal, and was sent to multiple hospitals following his father’s arrest. He finally found him at St. Luke’s Hospital, where his father received staples for a head wound.
“Beating up an 84-year-old man for jaywalking?” said the outraged son. “It’s just unbelievable. An 84-year-old man… ”
On Monday, Wong was issued a ticket and charged with “resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct” and jaywalking. Following the death of nine people who have died due to jaywalking, police said they are cracking down by handing out tickets that vary from $40 to $100 dollars.
