Today in “Stories From Florida” we have a woman who was forced by police to defecate in her own lawn, lawmakers who are trying to restrict media access to Stand Your Ground case records and a man who told police he was on his way to kill his friend.

And yes, all of this is really happening.

Fertilizer or Nah?

A woman in Florida is suing Volusia County and the city of New Smyrna Beach, claiming police officers forced her to poop in her front yard and undress in front of them during a meth bust.

Dawn Brooks, who was led from her home in handcuffs, requested to use the bathroom indoors. But the officers “told her to ‘just use the restroom right there’ in the front yard, which plaintiff did,” according to a district court judge’s summary of the incident.

Instead of helping her clean herself up and get dressed, she was striped down and put into a plastic jumpsuit while cops laughed and yelled at her.

Brooks’s complaint alleges the officers violated her Fourth Amendment rights and that the city failed to adequately train the cops who searched her house. Judge Roy Dalton Jr. dismissed her initial claims, saying she failed to show that the need for training was “plainly obvious” and didn’t specifically explain how her rights were violated.

It’s unclear if they officers found the meth they were looking for. Read about it here…[Gawker]

Stand Your Ground’s Secret Society:

Lawmakers concerned with the media’s meddling in Stand Your Ground cases are trying to file an amendment that would impede the media’s ability to scrutinize the controversial “Kill at Will” law.

The move comes after a Tampa Bay Times’ review of 200 cases that involved the controversial “Stand Your Ground” law found an “uneven application” and “shocking outcomes.”

Earlier this month, state Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fort Walton Beach) filed an amendment that would “severely limit access to court records in the self-defense cases,” the Times’ Michael van Sickler reports.

The amendment would allow those found innocent in a Stand Your Ground case to “apply for a certificate of eligibility to expunge the associated criminal history record.”

We can think of a few reasons why this is absolutely ridiculous For one, not allowing journalists to review the violent cases and how the law was applied doesn’t sound ethical at all. Read about it here…[HuffPost]

The Truth & Nothing But The Truth:

Alberto Moreno couldn’t keep his secret a secret when he was pulled over by officers for speeding in Fort Pierce.

During the traffic stop on Feb. 18, Moreno, 45, told police “that he was on his way to kill his friend for screwing him over earlier that day and that he knew he was speeding and all over the road as well as drunk.”

But he never made it there. He was arrested on a DUI charge. No word on the friend whose life was apparently spared. Read about it here…[TCPalm]
