Darrien Hunt’s second autopsy has shown plot holes in police reports that say the 22-year-old was swinging a fake samurai sword at them last month.

An autopsy by the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Officer shows that Hunt was shot six times in the back. The report also provides a major difference in a private autopsy that was done weeks before. Police reports claimed Hunt took acid weeks before the shooting, but the autopsy proves that no drugs were found in his body.

The autopsy by the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Officer corroborates an earlier private autopsy commissioned by Hunt’s lawyer Robert Sykes that also found he was shot in the back, although Sykes would not initially release a copy of that autopsy. A toxicology report was also released showing that Hunt had no drugs in his body, although officers noted in their original report that Hunt “apparently liked hallucinogens and had taken acid approximately three weeks” before the shooting, according to the Deseret News.

While some were unaware of Hunt’s reasoning for rocking a fake sword, the Utah native was a fan of the Japanese anime character Mugen from Samurai Champloo. Like the character, Hunt had on a red sweater and a fake sword strapped to his back.

Police were called after a woman claimed Hunt presented a threat while he walked around a Walmart with the toy.

Hunt’s family lawyer Randall Edwards maintains the evidence sheds new light on the case.

“It shows a familiarity, if not a fascination, with that kind of fantasy world,” Hunt’s lawyer Randall Edwards told the Guardian. “It gives some context – and potentially some explanation – to why you have this kid walking down the street with a samurai-style sword on his back.”

Hunt’s mother, who is white, previously stated that her son may have been killed because of his race.
