Wale stopped by The Breakfast Club to promote his new album Shine, which came out Friday. He talked about fatherhood, his relationship with J. Cole, and the current state of hip-hop.

One highlight of the interview was when the DMV rapper gave his thoughts on Katy Perry‘s collaboration with Migos on the just released song “Bon Appétit.” The rapper wasn’t here for it.

“Do you think Katy Perry would do a Wale song right now? Nah,” he started. “It’s like some A&R was like okay, ‘These guys, these guys are hot, they’re the Migos, look at this white kid at Coachella man, we’re going to get the White kids, the Black kids.'” Wale explained that music should be judged from the craft because what’s popular can change depending on who you ask. “My thing is, I just want the people to be educated. Like, everybody’s platform ain’t the same. I want people to just judge it really off the music and not really nothing else…popularity, all those things are skewed now. You can’t judge it off that.”
