Now, with over 21 million Twitter followers and 31 million plus fans on Facebook, the President is clearly #winning in the social media realm! In comparison, Romney falls short to Obama’s popularity on different social media platforms. On Twitter, the GOP nominee has 1.5 million followers and about 10.2 million “likes” on Facebook. As a result, Bloomberg news reports that the Obama campaign is more successful and effective in their social media outreach measures.

During the second presidential debate last week, 7.2 million people tweeted about the debate, the candidates and related terms. To capitalize on the Twitter debate frenzy, @BarackObama sent out 37 Twitter posts during the debate, which were re-tweeted 117,374 times. On the other hand, @MittRomney tweeted merely two times and received 6,810 re-tweets.

Social media has also been an effective tool in helping the President raise money.

Bloomberg reports:

Through August, the Obama campaign had raised $147 million from donors who had given him a cumulative total of $200 or less, according to the Campaign Finance Institute, a Washington- based group that analyzing political donations.

That was 34 percent of his total receipts from individuals over the course of the campaign. The numbers for Obama far exceeded Romney’s $39.5 million from small donors, which amount to 18 percent of his total, the center found.

However, the question of how much that really matters will remain unanswered until November 6.
