The family of Micayla Medek had heard about the shooting at a Colorado movie theater this past Friday, but they didn’t know what exactly had happened to the 23 year old.
They heard that she had been wounded in the shooting by James Holmes, but were unaware that she would soon be identified as one of the 12 dead bodies left in the theater after the tragedy.
According to the LA Times, nearly 20 hours after the shooting, they finally heard the horrible news about Cayla.
Her father, Greg Medek, went around to 6 different hospitals in the area along with her older sister Amanda, to get some information.

Greg’s sister spoke out about the news:
“My brother is very religious and this is really challenging his belief. His 81-year-old mother is here. She is hysterical. We don’t know what to do — we feel so helpless.”
Micayla was a graduate of William C. Hinkley High School in Aurora, Colorado and a member of the class of 2015 at the Community College of Aurora.

Friends also spoke out about to her family members trying to help Micayla out of the theater:
“She was coughing and she fell to the ground, and that’s when the police or whoever was trying to help her ushered them out and said ‘There is nothing you can do. That makes me think she was critical and they couldn’t move her.”
Her aunt said hours before her confirmed death:
“I just want to hear she’s not one of the ones laying in the theater. I keep looking at her Facebook page, hoping she will say, ‘I am OK.’ But there’s nothing.”
