When a couple in Irvine, California, the “safest town in America,” was gunned down earlier this week, cops didn’t have a lead or a motive in the crime.

But just a couple of days later, authorities have identified 33-year-old Christopher Dorner as a suspect and the alleged shooter in a series of incidents against LAPD cops Wednesday night.

Now information about Dorner’s past is being revealed, painting a detailed picture of his life before the alleged killings and insight to why he did them. The ex-LAPD officer and U.S. Navy reservist also left a long manifesto where he declared war on the police department, singling out specific targets in the department that “wronged him.”

“Unfortunately, this is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name.”

“I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty.”

But who is Dorner and what exactly pushed him to this point? Here are some facts about the alleged cop killer.

Christopher Jordan Dorner is a former LAPD officer and U.S. Navy reservist who was fired from the force in 2008, reportedly for making “false statements about a superior.” According to documents from a court of appeals in October 2011, Dorner was fired after he made a complaint against his field training officer, Sgt. Teresa Evans. Dorner said that in the course of an arrest, Evans kicked suspect Christopher Gettler, a schizophrenic with severe dementia.

Dorner was let go from the Navy this month, but prior to that he served in Afghanistan in 2006. He was highly trained in both the military and in the LAPD and threatened to use his knowledge in his “war” against the police department:

“You are aware that I have always been the top shot, highest score, an expert in rifle qualifications in every unit I’ve been in. I will utilize every bit of small armstraining, demolition, ordnance, and survival training I’ve been given.”

Dorner is suspected of shooting Michelle Quan and her fiancee, Keith Lawrence, earlier this week in a parking structure. Quan is the daughter of a former LAPD captain who became a lawyer in retirement and represented Dorner in front of the Board of Rights, a tribunal that ruled against Dorner at the time of his dismissal. Police are investigating whether Dorner killed the couple in revenge.

According to the LA Times, Dorner tried to steal a boat on Wednesday night to flee the country:

Police officials said they believed Christopher Jordan Dorner, 33, attempted to steal a 47-foot boat from an elderly man about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Southwestern Yacht Club in Point Loma, hours before the police shootings in Riverside.

The 81-year-old boat owner reported being accosted and tied up by a burly man dressed in black who threatened him with a gun and said he wanted the boat to flee to Mexico.

Dorner left a 20-page manifesto on his Facebook page detailing the incident that got him removed from the force and discussing his discontent with how the LAPD conducts business. He also lent insight to his personal life, giving his opinion on everything from President Obama to Jay-Z and even his stance on gay marriage. Read some of the most shocking revelations in his manifesto here.

Police are now searching for Dorner in Big Bear (California). They have yet to find him. This story is developing.
