Tensions have been high in New York City following the chokehold death of Eric Garner at the hands of the NYPD, and now, according new reports, two NYPD officers were fatally shot in Brooklyn while sitting in their patrol car.

The shooting occurred around 3:00 p.m. EST at the corner of Myrtle and Tompkins avenues in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood.

The unidentified shooter approached the vehicle from behind around 3:00 p.m. and opened fire before fleeing into the Myrtle-Willougby G train station with other police officers in pursuit. Witnesses report hearing a gunshot, though it has not been confirmed if police shot the suspect or if he died from self-inflicted wounds.

The two officers were rushed to Woodhull Medical Center, but were pronounced dead upon arrival. At least one of the officers was shot in the head.

One witness described the scene:

Carmen Jimenez, 32, a social worker from Bedford-Stuyvesant, was on the subway platform when the gunman ran inside, pursued by officers.

“Everything happened so quick,” said Jimenez, who is eight months pregnant. “We were standing waiting for the G train. We heard arguing from the other end of the platform.

It looked like two cops came in there was lots of yelling and they said, ‘Everybody get down.’

“We tried to get out of there, and there was a lot of shouting, people were screaming, people were trying to run.

“I threw myself on the floor. I was afraid for my life and afraid for my baby.”

Though police have not identified the shooter, the New York Post is reporting the man took to Instagram before shooting the officers, posting photos of the gun with the comment: “I’m Putting Wings on Pigs Today.”

Police have not confirmed if the suspect is responsible for these posts, though police have said the suspect came from Baltimore, Md., to carry out the attack. We’ll keep you updated with the latest.
