The last thing to cross your mind when you think of hip-hop is ‘school.’ Unless of course, you’ve just bodied someone in a freestyle battle. But that kind of vintage vernacular has already been put to rest in the Ebonics section of the hip-hop museum.
Even though the art of rhyme isn’t a common course available on a school’s curriculum list, the culture of hip-hop is. With attractive courses like “Sociology of Hip-Hop – Urban Theology of Jay-Z” taught by Dr. Michael Eric Dyson at Georgetown University, many students attached to the culture have been showing up in droves.

But Jay-Z’s course wasn’t the first break academic ground. In 2006, 9th Wonder returned to the founding grounds of Little Brother to teach “Hip Hop in Context: 1973-1997” at North Carolina Central University.
And in 2009 while locked up, T.I. schooled his fellow inmates on how to get back on their feet once they got out.
Just recently it was announced that swagged out rapper Lil B The Based God had been booked for a ‘very rare’ speaking engagement at New York’s highly respected university, NYU.

Yeah, they said “rare.”
