Mississippi has got some explaining to do.

The 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, was ratified in 1865. Mississippi, however, did not officially ratify the amendment until last month. The amendment was ratified (which just means confirmed into law) after three-fourths of the sates supported its purpose in 1865. Mississippi was the odd man out.

Ranjan Batra, a Mississippi resident, was inspired to look into the history of the 13th Amendment in Mississippi after watching Lincoln. Batra contacted fellow Mississippian, Ken Sullivan, who then contacted the Mississippi Secretary of State, Delbert Hosemann.

Lincoln is a movie directed by Steven Spielberg that depicts the history of struggle and success associated with the ratification of the 13th Amendment.

Together Batra, Sullivan, and Hosemann made sure that the ratification of the 13th Amendment in Mississippi was completed. Hosemann sent the Office of the Federal Register a copy of the 1995 resolution and just a week later, the ratification was official.

There is no answer as to why the amendment was not properly made official. Dick Molpus, who served as Secretary of State said, “What an amendment to have an error in filing.”

Way to step up to the plate Ranjan!
