An Afghanistan village is still reeling after an American soldier allegedly killed 16 civilians in their homes overnight between Saturday and Sunday and then burned their corpses. Nine of the victims were children and three were women.

The unknown solider walked from a NATO base and approached three different houses, killing 11 people in the first house, four in the second and one in the third.

A diagnosis is pending, but as the 38-year-old staff sergeant remains in U.S. custody, military medical experts believe that three types of psychological situations could have led to the rampage: a psychotic break, an accumulation of resentment and anger, or simple sadism.

Adding that warning signs are generally a pre-cursor to violent actions, erratic and changed behavior in the soldier, insomnia, weight loss, talking nonsensically or incoherently, making threatening statements or drug use could be a cause as to why the soldier went on his shooting rampage.

This may be one of the biggest cases for removing troops from Afghanistan, as we have seen more incidents involving troops and Afghan civilians. Earlier this year, a video emerged showing four US Marines urinating on the corpses of three Taliban fighters.

And just a couple of weeks ago, Afghan workers found scorched Korans in piles of rubbish. The discovery sparked violence across the region in which around 30 Afghans and six US soldiers were killed.
