The Zimmerman not-guilty verdict has sparked protests from Trayvon supporters, with rallies held in 100 cities over the weekend.

But it also brought out Zimmerman sympathizers – and in Houston, the two groups clashed.

After catching wind that New Black Panther activists would be marching for Justice for Trayvon, gun enthusiasts took to the streets.

The mostly white group held signs outside Starbucks and Barnes & Noble that read “Zimmerman is As White as Obama” and chanting “USA” and “Go home, racists!”

A member of the group, Scott Shirley, 32, explained that he thought there had been so few pro-Zimmerman demonstrations because people were “scared to come forward, afraid of being attacked.” No such fears are present in the conservative, gun-friendly state of Texas.

One of the few black Zimmerman supporters, Jeffery Williams, 45, a gun-owner who was sporting a National Rifle Association hat said:

“I’m tired of this country being separated by race…It’s separating the whole country. It’s not about black and white; it’s about wrong and right.”

As alarming as all of that is, the good news is that the Trayvon supporters far outnumbered the pro-Zimmerman demonstrators, and protests nationwide have been peaceful, nonviolent, and void of hate.

Can’t say the same for some of Zimmerman’s supporters.
