When Urooj Khan died last July a day after winning $1 million in a lottery, authorities believed it was due to natural causes.

But last month, family members called for an investigation after suspecting that his wife poisoned him. On Friday, The Cook County Medical Examiner released results that showed Khan was killed by cyanide poisoning.

Now, police are investigating his death as a homicide.

“The manner of death is homicide,” said Cook County Medical Examiner Stephen Cina.

Family members have been waiting to find out more information on what appears to be a tragic and mysterious demise.

“There was a lethal amount of cyanide circulating in his blood stream at the time of death,” he said. But there was no cyanide present in the tissues or organs after the autopsy.

The medical examiner said that would be consistent with cyanide’s half life.

“If you find high levels of cyanide in the lungs higher than the other organs like the stomach or blood, then you can determine that the cyanide was taken into the body via inhalation,” he said. “Likewise if you find the highest levels in the stomach then it was probably ingested.”

The investigation is still ongoing.
