The mother of Zurana Horton joined community leaders in an emotional vigil for her slain daughter earlier today.

Zurana made headlines last week, when she was shot to death as a gunman opened fire from a rooftop across from a Brooklyn public school.

Many at the rally shouted: “It’s not snitching, it’s saving a life!”

STORY: She Has A Name: Zurana Horton, Pregnant Mother Of 13, Shot And Killed At A Brooklyn Public School

Zurana, the mother of 12, died of a gunshot wound to the chest while protecting students from a gunman on a rooftop, who had opened fire on rival gang members.

As Reported By NBC:

Denise Peace, the mother of Zurana Horton, stood beside the Rev. Al Sharpton and elected officials in Brooklyn Monday to urge the city to take action against gun violence.

“We are sending a signal to our young people that we can’t protect them, and that they need to join a gang to be protected,” Sharpton said. “I hope this incident can wake the city up.”

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said he is convening a meeting of community leaders and elected officials at Borough Hall to “discuss immediate actions we can take to stem the tide of violence in Brownsville and beyond.”

Brownsville is one of the most crime-plagued neighborhoods in the city.

Horton was the third of her siblings to die from gun violence. Her two brothers were also killed in gunfire, according to their mother Denise Peace.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Horton family as they continue to cope with this horrible tragedy.
