GlobalGrind caught up with designer extraordinaire Rachel Roy several days before she will debut her collection for Spring 2012 at New York Fashion Week.

Anxious to see the collection, we hit Rachel up and pleaded for images and words about what inspired her and the narrative driving the collection.

In answer to our probing questions, Rachel emailed us three images: One where she is photographed in a fitting, a collage of images from the 1990s film The Lover (L’Amant) based on the 1984 semi-autobiographical novel by Marguerite Duras and an image of a Van Gogh painting.

Of the Van Gogh, Roy said: “Another inspiration shot … beauty in delicate touches … as much as possible our eyes should fall on things that inspire and please … life is hard enough as it is.”

Roy described her show and collection, which will debut on September 12, as “Soft masculine touches mixed with the ease of youth and the refinement of Asia.”
