Yeezy finally showed his Dw collection of womenswear clothing on October 1st in Paris and it opened to mixed reviews.  Some critics thought that the collection lacked focus and was a bit scatter-brained. Others said that it was work by an obvious beginner who was over-reaching and had unflattering silhouettes. Me? I liked the show.

Granted I’m not a woman, nor do I wear or ever plan to wear women’s clothing, but I am definitely a fan of the female form and can tell when something looks good. And most of Kanye’s Dw collection looked pretty damn good to me. That said, I have 2 major points that could have helped Kanye have a much better show.

1. Yeezy decided he wanted the garments to be ultra luxe (it was even rumored that some of his garments would be near impossible to reproduce after it left the runway), so we completely understand the use of fur and leather. But wasn’t this supposed to be a spring/summer show, Ye?

Regardless of how much we liked how the dresses looked, it doesn’t make sense for things to be made out of leather or a fur for spring or summer. Unless you are designing for summer in Alaska, I don’t quite get the use of materials.

2. How many “hands were in the pot” when the designing collection? It looks like there were about five different themes for this show. Were the colors and designs cohesive, the critics would have been easier on you, Kanye.

I noticed that the pieces didn’t seem to be related on a much higher level than the color scheme.

Outside of that, the individual garments were amazing!

One of my favorites was the tiger face jacket with the teeth and whiskers of a bejeweled tiger on the front of the jacket. The shoes designed by Giuseppe Zanotti looked amazing as well. Kanye’s take on the tiger hoodie that A Bathing Ape made famous, really brought the streetwear scene to a high fashion medium.

The beadwork used on some of the garments was nothing short of amazing, too and it isn’t hard to tell why recreating these items would be near impossible. I would love seeing someone wear those garments in real life.

People who immediately bashed Kanye for his show have to remember that he is still a beginner. Although he has a name behind him, he is still a long way from being Karl Lagerfeld. Kanye’s silhouettes may not all have been the most flattering, but I’m pretty sure that he did a lot better than some of you who have been criticizing him.

Even though it makes no sense to be walking around in a fur backpack during the summer, you have to admit that the bag looked unlike anything you have ever seen. I’m not condoning the use of fur on anything but, sometimes, you have to step outside of yourself and appreciate something for what it is.

The leather dresses may have been gravity defying and in desperate need of double-sided tape to actually be worn, but if pulled off properly, I think that everything in the collection could be worn.

We are sure that Kanye’s muse, Australian Harper’s Bazaar editor Christine Centenera, could wear anything in the collection and (granted every woman is not Christine Centenera), I know that there is something that any fashionable woman can appreciate in the collection.

Maybe his next collection will be a bit more cohesive and weather conscious but, in my opinion, this one was just fine.  Congrats ‘Ye!
