Back in 2006, liquor company Cristal shot themselves in the foot when Frederic Rouzaud, the managing director of Louis Roederer, the company that produces the expensive champagne, publicly said he didn’t like the brand’s association with rappers and the “bling lifestyle.”

After that comment was made, rappers started boycotting the liquor, a ban lead by Jay-Z. The boycott eventually lead to a drop in sales for a drink that was once immensely popular in hip-hop circles.
Recently, Complex talked to a U.S. Lamborghini spokesperson about the video for Kanye West’s ode to the fast car, “Mercy,” and hip-hop’s association with the whip in general.

The spokesperson said this:
“We appreciate the publicity. But more importantly, we hope Kanye has the opportunity to fully experience the exhilarating performance and technical innovations found in all Lamborghinis.”
You got to hand it to the dudes at Lamborghini — they weren’t going to Cristal themselves.
