New Yorkers have to be wary of many of their own, as robbers have been posing as Con Edison workers to steal from homes inside the blacked-out zone of Lower Manhattan.

Safety is the main concern, and many are worried as they enter their fifth day without power.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal:

On the Lower East Side, would-be robbers posing as utility-repair workers had security officials in apartment buildings on high alert. While post-storm looting has occurred in other parts of New York City, there haven’t so far been major reports of crime in the darkened neighborhoods south of 34th Street.

Henry Choi said three doormen — instead of one — stood at the entrance to his apartment building near Delancey and Forsyth, checking IDs of people going in and out. They told him the extra security is as a result of incidents in nearby buildings where people dressed as Consolidated Edison Inc. ED -1.09% employees had managed to get into homes by claiming they were there to help restore power.

Irma Batista and Yvonne D’Aguilar, both residents of the Jacob Riis Houses in East Village, said that security was now their biggest concern. Power hasn’t been restored in the housing development, which lies inside an evacuation zone.

New Yorkers need to be aware of the dangers of trusting people in times of crisis. Many have bad intentions of nothing but pulling the wool over your eyes and tricking you.
