David Tiscareno was indentified by police on Monday for shooting and killing 50-year-old Cpl. David Gogian and 29-year-old Jeff Atherly. Authorities say the suspect has died after an armed standoff with law enforcement at a house in the city.

Shawnee County officials say in a statement that Kansas Bureau of Investigation officers tried to negotiate with the suspect before firing tear gas into the home.

The statement says he emerged from the home carrying a gun and officers shot him. He was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries early Monday.

It wasn’t clear if the suspect fired his gun.

Residents of Topeka remembered the fallen police officers with vigils around the community. Police have yet to release all details surrounding the circumstances of their death, but according to Fox News, it is unclear whether the police drew their weapons as well.

The call about the vehicle came shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, police said. Gogian and Atherly had arrived as backup for another officer when someone in the vehicle they were investigating started shooting. Police would not say whether the officers had reached the vehicle when they were shot or what kind of gun was used in the shooting.

Both officers were shot in the head and pronounced dead upon arrival to the hospital. We’ll keep their families in our prayers.
