Not long ago, the world got a chance to glance at the iMobot. It’s a reconfigurable robot that links together like a chain to form bigger versions of itself, which would come in handy for search and rescue operations. California researchers are in the process of patenting this little gadget.

With its modules, joints, and rotating faceplates at each end, the mechanic capabilities of this tiny robot are great. The iMobot can stand itself up, transform into a small camera stand, roll like a mini tank tread, or squirm along like a worm. Research on clusters of iMobots working together in much bigger modular platforms is to come.

Canon has got its eye on you, in 3D. A firmware update that can be downloaded to the professional grade XF305 and XF300 camcorders allow them to record 3D HD video. Its 3D Assist Feature takes away the hassle of setting up two cameras to record in 3D by optically aligning their lenses and calibrating their zoom settings.

The scan reverse feature has also been enhanced to make flippling the video’s orientation from horizontal to diagonal to vertical easy; that trick will definitely come in handy when using a 3D mirror rig.

An added bonus: the update includes the ability to turn of relay recording from one memory card to another and the option of simultaneously recording to two memory cards. The thing is, you’ll need two the these higher priced cameras in order for it to work.
