A California teenager is paralyzed after a bullet came through a wall in her home and hit her spine as she watched television.

Dominique Romero, 19, was sitting on her sofa when an unknown gunman fired up to nine shots on the street outside of her home. One of those rounds pierced through the wall, hitting her.

Her brother Chris Solis described how he heard the gunshots and then his sister screaming. He called emergency services as his stepfather applied pressure to the wound.

He said: “It hurts because I’m used to her being full of life and running around.

But, as a true testament to her fiery personality, Dominique is grateful to be alive. And, according to her mother, she didn’t even cry when she found out what challenges she will face now that she is paralyzed.

“My heart is broken,” said Lori Romero. “I can’t imagine what my baby is going through. She didn’t even cry. She’s like, ‘I’d rather be paralyzed mom, than gone.'”

Richmond police do not believe the family’s home was the intended target. They have yet to find a suspect in connection with the shooting.

“This was kind of a freak thing where it went into the house and hit her,” Sgt. Nicole Abetkov told the Contra Costa Times.

Police in Richmond are offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Our prayers go out to Dominique and her family.
