This is every parent’s worst nightmare; perhaps we should start paying attention when kids say they have imaginary friends.

The 12-year-old girl, who was taken to the woods and stabbed 19 times by her classmates in hopes of impressing the scary fictional character Slender Man, has spoken for the first time since the incident.

For the first time since the incident, she’s made an appearance, on ABC’s 20/20, revealing that the knife missed her major artery by less than a hair’s width. The victim, Peyton Leutner, wasn’t aware that her best friends were plotting her murder 5 months in advance. Just after arriving to a sleepover in May, she was lured into the woods and later crawled for her life after being stabbed in the arms, legs, stomach and chest, repeatedly.

Her mother, Stacy Leutner, said Peyton feared the paranormal figure known as Slender Man and that she tried to back away as they approached the woods “sensing something was wrong.” When asked by her parents how she managed to crawl out of the woods, Peyton responded:

I wanted to live.

Her attackers, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, both 12-years-old, have been charged as adults for first-degree intentional homicide. We are happy to see Peyton alive and well.
