UPDATE: 2:00pm EST

Joe Paterno’s family said that the NCAA’s sanction against Penn State was a “panicked response” that only punishes the students.

The statement was released Monday by Paterno’s family, saying that President Rodney Erickson failed by not seeking a full hearing before the NCAA’s infractions committee.

The family also said that punishing “past, present and future” students because of former assistant Jerry Sandusky’s crimes did not serve justice.

The family calls the move a “panicked response to the public’s understandable revulsion” at Sandusky’s sexual abuse of 10 boys over a period of 15 years.

The NCAA has severely punished Penn State for its cover-up of the sexual abuse by assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who was recently convicted of the molestation of various boys during a twenty-year period.

Our homeboys over at ShortFormBlog broke it down for us:

This is the harshest punishment by the NCAA of any school in the history of sports. Our prayers are with the victims of these horrible crimes.
