As Reported By Dallas News:

Hundreds of mourners packed a Brownwood church this morning for the funeral of a firefighter who died in a fall last week during a father-son outing to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

More than 50 fire vehicles from across Texas escorted the casket of Shannon Stone to a Brownwood cemetery after the service at First United Methodist Church in the Central Texas town.

Dozens of firefighters in full dress uniform filed into the church Monday, along with family and friends of the 39-year-old father and career fireman.

“The whole community is praying for that family and also for that little boy, Cooper,” said Debra Kirkland, whose firefighter son served as one of the pallbearers.

Also in attendance were Texas Rangers president and CEO Nolan Ryan and vice president Jim Sundberg.

Stone was with his 6-year-old son Thursday at the Arlington ballpark when he fell 20 feet while reaching over the outfield railing to catch a ball thrown to him by Texas Rangers left fielder Josh Hamilton.

The memorial service, which was closed to the media, was packed, and streets around the church were lined with vehicles.

“There are cars stretched for miles and miles on the streets waiting for him as he goes home to rest,” Kirkland said.

Stone’s simple wooden casket arrived in a fire engine, and after the service 10 firefighter pallbearers carried it back to the truck for the eight-mile trip to Jordan Springs Cemetery.

Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes said Stone’s family was trying to celebrate his life, “but it’s still difficult to accept, obviously, the nature of the death and the timing of the death and the way that it happened.”

Stone took his son to a Rangers game in Arlington on Thursday night. They stopped to buy the boy a new glove on the way, and sat in left field, behind Hamilton, Cooper’s favorite player.
