There are a lot of misconceptions about Tika Sumpter.

A simple girl from Queens who is constantly on her grind, this committed actress put in the footwork to make it as far as she has.

Aware of the misconceptions about her, we sat down with Tika to get the truth behind it all.

With growing fame, Tika also takes on the blogosphere and her fans.

She addresses everything we were dying to know. Check it out below!

What’s the biggest misconception about Tika?

That I just all of a sudden came on the scene and that I started as a model. That is not it at all.

Actually, I was singing before anything and I did model once for something really small. When I think of models I think of Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, that’s modeling to me.

There are different types of modeling, but I did one thing and everybody is like ‘She’s a model turned actress.’

I did that for fun at the time and I needed money and you get it where you fit in, but I was still pursuing acting at the same time and feel like that’s misconstrued.

Also, that I just showed up and started booking jobs. I’ve been doing this for a while and not everybody is right on the scene at first, and not everybody knows who you are. They say it takes 10 years to make a success. I’m not this person who just randomly started booking jobs, I’ve been doing this for a while, it’s just now you’re going to see me more with different things.

You’re killing it right now. You went from Gossip Girl to major movie roles and you’re everywhere. You’re on all the blogs when you hit a red carpet, so it must be a good thing.

I am so appreciative. I’ve gotten more love than hate so I’m so excited that people embrace me. I’m just a girl from Queens who has a dream and who’s continuing to pursue it like everybody else working hard. I
think people recognize that and maybe see a little bit of themselves in me. I’m on my grind and that’s it.

It seems like it’s only a matter of time before you get a part in a ‘Pass the Torch’ type movie with Gabrielle Union and the actresses that we looked up to when we were younger. You’ll be that.

From your lips to God’s ears. I just hope that I can always do really good work and be great at what I do and just continue to be humble and loving and fun. I just love what I do, I honestly thank God everyday that I get to do what I do and meet the people I meet, even with the fans, just interacting with them on a whole other level now-a-days.

It’s so sweet when they come up to me and they’re like ‘Oh my God I really like you!’ and I’m taking it all in and enjoying it and enjoying the journey. I’m not in a rush to get to my ending so I’m enjoying this whole situation.
