The glittering motherland of Africa was highlighted in all its glory when Fashion Week came to Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city, for the second time.
Put the images of Paris, New York and Milan runways featuring models with European features out of your mind, because Lagos fashion week celebrated the continent’s fashion culture with much more grandiose couture than the industry has seen in years.

For the second year in Lagos, seventy-seven rising African, or African based designers showed their fashions off, sending beautiful African models down the marbled runway in their designs.
From Nicki Minaj-esque pink wigs to high fashion couture, the fashions showcased on the Lagos runway depict not only Nigerians’ undying love for fashion, but a cultural shift that sees African fashions as far more than tribal prints.
According to the organizers, the event is a means of showing the whole world that “Nigeria has much to offer in the way of vibrancy and extraordinary talent in fashion, making it the cultural capital of Africa.”
Some of the industry’s top global models like Georgie Badiel, Alek Wek and Oluchi Onweagba took the runway during the show.

The amount of designers from Africa and beyond involved in Lagos fashion week has jumped to a whopping 77 from the 50 that showed last year in Lagos. The exponential growth speaks volumes not only about the success of Lagos fashion week, but also about Africa’s growing influence in the fashion industry.
Our dearest mother Africa, thank you for the diversification of fashion, it is about time you are realized for your true creative beauty.
