The Trayvon Martin case has woken up a sleeping nation blinded by racial profiling, loose gun laws and the plight of young black men. And thanks largely to Benjamin Crump, the lead attorney who represents the Martin family, America has taken notice.
Through Crump’s efforts, Trayvon’s case has become international news. Thousands of people continue to march with their hoodies while holding bags of Skittles, President Obama has already taken notice and the U.S. Department of Justice and F.B.I. has been forced to take a serious look into the killing of Trayvon.
But what you don’t know is that Crump has been fighting for civil rights since he was a kid attending segregated schools until he was in the fifth grade.
Civil rights leaders have even co-signed Crump. Rev. Jesse Jackson said of the lawyer:
“He has integrity, smarts and an uncanny ability. He is not flashy. He is just kind of a basic, old, solid-thinking, country lawyer.”
The kid from the small town of Lumberton, N.C. has become one of the leading voices in the Trayvon Martin case. He travels everywhere with Trayvon’s parents so they can tell their story and he remains the same man his grandmother raised him to be. Here are some things you need to know about Benjamin Crump.
