Jay-Z caught the train to Brooklyn. Yes, you read that right.

Over the weekend, Shawn Carter himself decided to take the train to his very own show at the Barclays Center. Great idea and all – except it reeks of marketing.

Mainly because the man who ranks higher then Jesus on the Forbes List caught the R train to Brooklyn, but he didn’t hop on the train like you and I do.

It’s being reported that the man who boasts about being able to park in his own arena might not have paid to get on the train, and knowing multi-millionaires like I do, his whole ride might have been prearranged. Think about it, Jay-Z showing up unannounced to a subway station would cause mass hysteria, and it did. But the MTA was prepared.

Jay took the train with armed bodyguards and plainclothes police officers in his clique. The hefty dudes surrounded him, while Jay hugged the wall like one of those guys who pay $50 to come in the club and ice grill everyone, as all they snap pictures and shout questions.

Once Jay got on the train, he sat with an elderly white lady while his paid security goons surrounded him, keeping the now jam-packed train passengers from getting too close to Hov.

I don’t know about y’all, but Jay-Z’s bodyguard is the scariest looking dude I’ve ever seen, but I digress.

First off, I hate taking the subway in New York, it’s crowded, dirty, hot, rat-infested and slower than the turtle that won the race. Aside from that, however, it’s pretty darn safe.

I’m not mad Jay-Z has security with him for his train ride; he’s never be able to walk 10 feet without people wanting to shake his hand, take pictures and ask him for an autograph; my issue is that he had a camera crew with him.

Again, that just reeks of marketing. It seems like this was more of a board meeting decision and not ‘hey, I feel like catching the train.’

Secondly, he didn’t catch the train back home. Instead he had his luxury vehicle whisk him away to wherever it is that super talented, super dope emcees go after they finish 8 sold out concerts in Brooklyn.

I say all of that to say this: as a Jay-Z stan who feels like Jay outshone Eminem on “Renegade,” won the battle with Nas, and is hands down the greatest emcee to ever touch a mic, catching the subway for press is something that Jay-Z doesn’t do.

I get it, he and Beyonce are regular people who play Connect Four, and drink liquor out of plastic red cups, but let’s really face it: Jay-Z and Beyonce are not regular people who ride the the New York subway. The whole thing was just a tad bit awkward.
