It is time to face the reality of one of the largest health issues across the globe! You may have either suffered this or know someone that has: High Sodium.

Yes, excessive sodium is deadly as hell and basically no joke! Sodium is known to cause Fluid Retention which means the more sodium you consume, the more water your body will retain.

Studies have been proven that fluid retention actually increases your blood pressure. This happens whether your blood pressure was originally normal or already high. High-blood pressure is a freaking serious problem that can lead to heart disease and stroke. Fluid Retention can also make you feel bloated and uncomfortable. For some of us like myself, it can cause swelling of the face and extremities. That’s why I say NO NO NO to adding salt!

Most adults should not consume more than 2300mg of sodium per day. This is comparable to 1 tsp of table salt, but Americans are averaging 3,400 mg in a single day. Part of this is because we depend on processed foods, fast food, canned products and even restaurant foods that all tend to be high in sodium.

Some of the effects on “ODing” (Overdosing) on sodium are…

Kidney Disease:

Any excess of sodium in your body is filtered out and eliminated through the kidneys. The more sodium you consume, the harder your kidneys have to work to eliminate the excess. Overworking the kidneys can damage them. If the kidneys cannot filter out all the excess sodium present in your blood, the sodium will accumulate in your blood, increasing your blood pressure.

According to medical site Davita.com, high blood pressure can reduce kidney function, worsening the whole filtering process and further damaging the kidneys.

Hypernatremia:

Hypernatremia is a medical term used to describe a high concentration of sodium in the blood. This occurs when a person consumes a lot of sodium but drinks very little water. It can also happen if you get dehydrated due to diarrhea or excessive sweating. Giving fluids to help restore the sodium balance in the body can treat Hypernatremia. If left untreated, however, it can lead to confusion, muscle twitching and even coma and DEATH!

Keep in mind that sodium is needed for muscle contractions, nerve transmissions, maintaining pH balance, and hydration. Sodium also regulates the fluid outside of the cells and is needed to pump fluid into the cells as potassium carries by-products out.

How much sodium do you need in your diet?

Some people, such as endurance athletes who compete for more than 2 hours at a time, may have a higher need for sodium because it is lost in the sweat. Others may need to consume fewer than the recommended 2300mg per day due to hypertension or sodium sensitivity.

What is sodium toxicity?

One last thing, be cautious of Signs of Sodium Toxicity” this includes swelling in the extremities and high blood pressure. Since sodium causes more calcium to be lost in the urine, high contents of sodium can also increase risks for osteoporosis. However, this does not usually escalate to any further problems as long as adequate amounts of water are being consumed throughout the day.

I’m not telling you not to eat out because of high sodium, but what I am saying is if and when you do “splurge” make sure you drink a lot of water and make sure you do some cardio to sweat it out!!

Thanks again GG and enjoy my new video touching the topic of High Sodium Foods above. 🙂
