In one of the most disturbing stories to come out of the Trayvon Martin shooting, the Grant Cushinberry Birthday Celebration in Eastern Topeka, KS crowned a winner in a Trayvon Martin look-alike contest.

Event organizer C.E. “Sonny” Scroggins said Taveion Lamb won the contest and will receive an award Friday afternoon.

Scrohhins said, “He looks just like Trayvon when he has his hoodie pulled up.”

Yes, he actually said that!

As reported by CJOnline:

The look-alike contest was sponsored in part to draw attention to ongoing rallies led by Scroggins that protest Martin’s shooting death this past March in Florida.

The rallies also are intended to garner support to overturn “stand your ground” laws such as the one in Florida.

“The stand your ground laws need to be repealed or replaced,” Scroggins said in a news release. “Vigilante justice has no place in the United States or Kansas.”

We understand the need to draw attention to the controversial “Stand Your Ground” law, but what purpose does a Trayvon Martin look-alike contest serve?
