These days, if something becomes a hit or a trend, it’s most likely thanks to fame brought up by users of the world wide web.
This year, television shows and movies, or even YouTube videos, were made more famous than they really were once GIFs for the episode or film hit the internet.
Whether it was of a kids cartoon, or a guy getting hit in the head with a soccer ball, millions of interesting videos were made into short loops, so the moments could be watched infinitely.
According to the Associated Press, Oxford Dictionary has just declared “GIF” as ‘American Word Of The Year,’ and it certainly seems the most appropriate choice!
Katherine Martin, the head of the U.S. dictionaries program at Oxford, recently said in a statement:
“GIF celebrated a lexical milestone in 2012, gaining traction as a verb, not just a noun.”
“The GIF has evolved from a medium for pop-cultural memes into a tool with serious applications including research and journalism, and its lexical identity is transforming to keep pace.”
Surprisingly enough, the word “GIF” actually beat out “YOLO,” the word rapper Drake pushed into a worldwide sensation, which was another contender for ‘Word Of The Year.’
It looks like the concept of only living once just can’t beat the looping of hilarious videos!
