The bus, which crashed in Oregon, was carrying about 40 people, police said. Nine individuals perished in the crash and 26 others have been injured.

“I’ve been a firefighter for 20 years and this is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like this,” Pendleton, Oregon, fire Lt. Steven Brost told CNN affiliate KPTV. “It appeared that most of the patients had actually been ejected from the bus as the bus went down the cliff.”

Lt. Greg Hastings said the bus crashed along an area called Deadman Pass, which tends to be icy during the winter months.

The driver of the bus, which was operated by Mi Joo Tour & Travel out of Vancouver, survived the crash but is also suffering from severe injuries. He has not yet spoken to authorities about the crash. An investigation is underway to determine the cause.

We’re praying for a speedy recovery for those injured in the crash.
