Last night we had the honor of celebrating the Chinese New Year with Vivienne Tam at her Fall 2013 runway presentation for Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion week.

NYFW: All Houndstooth Everything At Tommy Hilfiger Women’s Fall ’13

The show was set to a red background and as soon as the models began walking down the runway it became apparent that the show definitely had some punk rock influence.

Vivienne was inspired by the paradox of celebrating individuality, while embracing one’s cultural identity and she definitely embraced her Chinese heritage with this collection, as she has done in the past.

NYFW: Moncler Grenoble Has An Empire Of Soldiers To Rival Darth Vader’s

Some of the pieces have Chinese characters incorporated into the garments while others seemed to be military inspired, but they all came together for one cohesive collection that consisted of mainly red, black, white and navys.

There were no outrageous pieces, however, Vivienne’s incorporation of Chinese characters into the garments set her collection apart from everyone else.

Trends spotted: Oversized everything, fitted top pieces and longer undergarments, pop-color piecing

Faces in the front row: Angela Simmons, Diane Sawyer, Fern Mallis, Kevin Saer Leong

Our rating: We liked the collection, but we did feel like the pieces were made for more of a niche market.  Although we liked everything, we don’t know how often we would wear something with the Chinese characters plastered across them. Fans of Vivienne will be pleased, though.

Our favorite look: Belted red dress with circular cut out on back filled with Chinese characters
